Seminar: Digitale Werkzeuge und Methoden: Ausgewählte Gebiete der Architektur- und Stadtbaugeschichte: GESTALTUNG NACH KATALOG: Ornamentale Systeme und architektonische Komposition

Every ornamental system is also a catalog — a collection of pieces with rules for how they connect, combine, and accumulate. From the classical orders to 19th century cast iron foundry publications, architects have always composed with reproducible parts, connection rules, and combinatorial potential.

The seminar is interested in historical and contemporary ornamental systems, from 19th century industrial terracotta and cast-iron catalogs, to parametric part libraries and computational ornament — decoding their underlying grammars and combinatorial logics. From that research, students will develop an original personal catalog of 3D-printed pieces: profiles, surface patterns, transitions, joints, and elements governed by a coherent internal system.
