Seminar: Umweltgeschichte der Architektur: Ausgewählte Gebiete der Architektur- und Stadtbaugeschichte: Unbuilt Karlsruhe

Dr. Federico Garrido

From Friedrich Weinbrenner’s early 19th-century proposal to weave water canals through the city to radical cultural projects such as OMA’s unbuilt design for the ZKM, Karlsruhe has been a testing ground for ambitious visions that never materialized. These unbuilt projects reveal as much about the city’s aspirations, politics, and cultural identity as its constructed landmarks.

This seminar investigates a series of unrealized projects through architectural drawings, competition documents, and archival research. Using architectural research methods, representation tools, and comparative analysis, the seminar will culminate in a curated exhibition that presents an “fictional urban biography” of what might have been, revealing alternative trajectories and unrealized futures embedded within the city’s history.
